Inclusive Education: A Transformative Approach
Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) is at the forefront of promoting inclusive education for underprivileged children from Dalit and tribal communities. Its mission is to integrate these children into the mainstream education system and raise awareness about their rights. Recognizing that mental health challenges often hinder access to primary education, DVAS has prioritized pre-primary education, ensuring that children enter the primary level with a solid mental foundation.
A significant emphasis is placed on the education of girls, who frequently face discrimination based on caste and gender. DVAS is committed to ensuring the safety and security of girls, particularly in marginalized communities. The organization has fostered public awareness regarding safe educational environments through the formation of adolescent groups and has facilitated discussions on girls’ rights in collaboration with women’s groups.
In Bihar, DVAS has successfully implemented an inclusive education model across 100 government primary schools and 50 Anganwadi centers in districts such as Gaya, Samastipur, Vaishali, and Banka. This model emphasizes capacity building for local volunteers, empowering them to promote inclusive teaching practices. The organization’s approach is structured into three key programs:
Pre-Primary Learning Centers: These centers focus on the mental, social, and intellectual development of children. With support from the Ambedkar Kishori Club, 1,200 children have been enrolled in this nurturing environment.
Re-Admission Program: DVAS has creatively re-engaged with 8,500 children who had previously dropped out of school by providing playful educational opportunities, facilitating their re-admission.
Secondary and Higher Education: The Ambedkar Study Center offers education aimed at career development and preparation for competitive examinations. Currently, this initiative serves 200 students in Samastipur and Banka districts.
Through its comprehensive and holistic approach, DVAS not only motivates children to pursue education but also ensures their social inclusion. This empowers them to understand their rights and engage actively in their communities, contributing to a more equitable society.
