Breaking the Poverty Cycle: Development as Entrepreneur
The Dalit Vikas Abhiyan Samiti (DVAS) is committed to empowering marginalized communities, including Dalits, Adivasis, women, and youth, by providing them with essential skills and opportunities to achieve self-reliance. The organization’s primary aim is to break the vicious cycle of poverty that afflicts these groups. DVAS adopts a multifaceted approach that includes linking individuals to self-employment, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and facilitating access to government livelihood programs. The comprehensive approach of DVAS serves as a beacon of hope for marginalized communities. By empowering individuals through skill development, entrepreneurship training, and sustainable agricultural practices, DVAS is actively breaking the cycle of poverty. This work not only fosters personal growth but also contributes to broader social change, enhancing the values of equality and justice within society. The organization’s efforts demonstrate that entrepreneurship is a powerful tool for transformation, inspiring not just individuals but entire communities to strive for a better future. Through DVAS’s initiatives, the dream of self-reliance and dignity is becoming a reality for many, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous society.

Skill Development and Entrepreneurship:  A cornerstone of DVAS’s mission is to equip marginalized women and youth with skills that lead to self-employment. Training is offered in various fields such as tailoring, nursing, paramedical services, vehicle repair, electrician work, beautician skills, and computer literacy. These training programs not only impart essential skills but also foster a sense of self-reliance and confidence among participants.

As individuals enhance their skill sets, they become more marketable, enabling them to pursue entrepreneurial ventures. DVAS not only teaches these skills but also assists individuals in recognizing and harnessing their potential, thereby transforming their lives and circumstances.

Entrepreneurship Support: To further support entrepreneurial development, DVAS has initiated various programs. Through the National SC/ST Hub under the Ministry of MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises), DVAS works to register youth and provide them with training under industry-specific programs. This initiative is pivotal for nurturing self-reliance among youth and fostering an entrepreneurial spirit.

The organization provides necessary resources and guidance to aspiring entrepreneurs, making it easier for them to start their own businesses. This program has yielded significant success, with many youth launching small enterprises and achieving economic sustainability.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices: DVAS also focuses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices to ensure food security and stable livelihoods. The organization collaborates with Pusa Agricultural University to implement organic farming techniques, linking community members with sustainable methods such as group-based ragi farming and organic vegetable cultivation.

By providing kitchen gardens and seed support to 100 local organization cadres, DVAS has successfully enhanced food security and increased household incomes. Many workers have taken the initiative to cultivate vegetables like cauliflower, positively impacting their families’ nutritional status and economic conditions.

Entrepreneurship Training and Employment: An essential aspect of DVAS’s strategy is to develop Dalit and Adivasi youth as entrepreneurial leaders. The organization aims to free these individuals from the constraints of factory jobs and instead cultivate their entrepreneurial capabilities. DVAS assists youth in registering as entrepreneurs and enrolling them in the GeM (Government e-Marketplace) portal.

Moreover, DVAS helps youth register on various government job portals, facilitating access to employment opportunities in different companies. This initiative not only boosts their income but also enhances their self-esteem and fosters a sense of self-reliance.

Success Stories: The tangible impact of DVAS’s initiatives is evident in numerous success stories emerging from the communities it serves. For instance, many women and youth who have undergone training through DVAS are now successfully running their own businesses. One notable example is a young woman who, after receiving tailoring training, opened a thriving clothing store in her village. Similarly, numerous youths have successfully applied their agricultural skills, leading to increased incomes and improved quality of life.
